The reality of the situation is that the cost of DSL modems today are nominal. You can pickup a DSL modem for as little as $60 CAD. Most companies who charge modem rentals charge upwards of $6.00 per month for modem rentals. A lot of customers don't even know they have the option to buy their own modem and continue to pay the rental fees each month.
Nine times out of ten your modem is going to last you years. When modems do break, they generally break during the manufactures warranty period (this goes for most consumer electronics).
You also have to be careful of the condition your modem is in if your renting your modem. If your ISP deems at their own discretion that your modem is defective due to your own neglect, theres a good chance you wont qualify for a replacement modem, and will need to pay out of pocket anyway. Every ISP is different, so you need to be careful about their policies when it comes to the exchange.
Renting a modem is just like all those extended warranties the big box stores try to sell you each and every time you buy something that uses a battery or electricity.
The reality here is, all that time you were paying for modem rentals $6.00/month or more, you could easily afford to buy a new one. With the average modem being around $60.00 – you break even in the first year and start making your money back in months 11 and 12. Every month thereafter is savings and money back into your own pocket.
NOTICE: Please do not missinterpret this article. Sometimes electronics do go defective and need to be replaced, it does happen. All we're saying is that, typically if a device is going to go bad, it generally does during the manufactures warranty period, and if not, it works for much longer and has more than paid for itsself in what you've saved not paying monthly modem rental fees.
Lets be clear, by "no" means whatsoever does this mean we can promise everyone that their modem will last forever without issue, all we are saying is that for the vast vast vast majority of customers, they will save more money owing their modem, then renting it. It is for that reason we will not subject any of our customers to modem rental fees.
